Scalloped Cake Plate with Fruit
A 38 cm scalloped cake plate, hand-painted with lemons, grapes, and peaches by our artisans in Vietri sul Mare.
We call this a piatto torta smerlato — a scalloped cake plate. Our artisans in Vietri sul Mare shape each one by hand, forming the wavy, ruffled edge that gives it its name. The whole piece is then glazed and painted freehand with a wreath of Mediterranean fruit: lemons, blue grapes, peaches, and green leaves running around the wide rim.
Looking at it up close, you can see the soft aqua tint along the scalloped edge and a light blue-green wash in the centre, framed by thin brown and golden bands. The brushwork is loose and confident — each grape cluster, each lemon, slightly different from the next. That's because our painters don't use stencils or transfers.
At 38 cm across, it's a proper cake plate. Plenty of room for a torta della nonna or a crostata. But we also see customers use it as a fruit platter or a centrepiece. The scalloped rim gives it enough personality to sit on a table on its own.
Everything is made with food-safe glazes, and it's built to be used, not just admired. If you spot small variations in colour between pieces, that's the nature of handmade work — each plate is its own.
