Scalloped Oval Serving Plate with Fruit

In Italian we call this a sperlunga smerlata piana — an oval serving plate with a scalloped edge and a flat profile. Our artisans in Vietri sul Mare shape it by hand, and the wavy rim gives it a softer, more traditional look than a straight-edged platter.

The decoration follows the San Domenico line, one of the classic patterns from our region. Around the rim you'll see a garland of hand-painted fruit — yellow lemons, clusters of blue grapes, and small red cherries, all connected by green leaves and curling stems. The centre is left clean white, which makes the fruit border pop and gives you a good surface for presenting food.

We see customers use these for antipasti, grilled fish, a display of cheeses, or just as a decorative piece on a sideboard. The flat shape makes it practical for serving, and the generous oval size fits well on most tables. Because everything is painted freehand, the fruit and leaves will look slightly different on every plate — that's the nature of the work.
